7 Essential Tips for Exploring Angkor Wat: Unlock Its Wonders

Updated: Mar 31, 2023

1. Purchase your Angkor Wat pass directly from the Angkor Park Pass Ticket office.

If you plan to watch the sunrise at Angkor Wat, buying your tickets the night before is best since the ticket office can get crowded and opens at 5 am.

To prevent ticket fraud, your photo will be captured and printed on each ticket, which means the tickets cannot be easily transferred to someone else.

Note: Whenever you enter the large area of Angkor, you'll have to show your ticket to get in. You'll also need to show your ticket multiple times while you're there, including at each temple you visit.

  • The 1-day pass for the Angkor Archaeological Park costs $37, while the 3-day pass costs $62 and $72 for 7 days.

  • Tickets can be purchased at the Angkor Park Pass Ticket office, located on Apsara Road in Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia.

  • Payments can be made with a card at the ticket office, which can be a convenient option for those without cash on hand.

What is the opening time of Angkor Wat?

You can drive to the Angkor area from 5am, but it might be possible to go earlier. Most temples are open to tourists from 7:30am to 5:30pm. Some temples open at sunrise and sunset, such as Angkor Wat at sunrise and Phnom Bakheng at sunset.

2. Hire a tour guide:

Hiring a guide is a great way to learn more about the history and significance of Angkor Wat. A guide can also help you navigate the complex and avoid crowds. You can hire a guide through your hotel or online.

Regis and Chris from Angkor Travel Photography were my guides for Angkor Wat. They provided transportation, hotel pick-up, and drop-off as part of the tour package.

3. Dress appropriately:

Make sure to wear comfortable and modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, as a sign of respect for the local culture and religion

4. See the Angkor Wat Sunrise

Only four temples are open early for sunrise, which are Angkor Wat, Srah Srang, Phnom Bakheng, and Pre Rup temple.

  1. Angkor Wat: This is the most popular temple to watch the sunrise in Angkor. It's an iconic and stunning view as the sun rises over the temple's five towers. We got our spot for the sunrise here.

  2. Srah Srang: This is a man-made reservoir located east of Banteay Kdei. It's a peaceful and quiet spot to watch the sunrise.

  3. Pre Rup: This temple mountain is located in the east of the Angkor Archaeological Park. It offers a stunning view of the surrounding forest and countryside at sunrise.

  4. Phnom Bakheng: This temple mountain is located near Angkor Wat and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area at sunrise.

5. Bring cash:

Most places in the area do not accept credit cards, so make sure to carry enough cash with you.

Note: They accept US dollars but make sure that the bills are not ripped, torn, or otherwise damaged, as many vendors and ticket booths may refuse to accept damaged bills.

6. Transportation

For those who prefer to explore Angkor Wat independently, without a guide, there are several transportation options available to choose from.

Hire a tuktuk to take you to the main highlights of the complex.

In fact, many of the tuktuk drivers are quite knowledgeable about the area and can share some interesting information with you along the way.

The cost of a tuktuk driver depends on your agreed route.

  • Small tour (Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm, Bayon temples) costs around $15

  • Big tour (more distant temples) costs around $25

  • Sunrise/sunset rides cost around $12

Rent a bike

Renting a bike is a fantastic way to see Angkor Wat! You can easily rent a bike on practically every street corner in Siem Reap. The area is completely flat, so it's perfect for biking around and exploring the temples.

If you're looking to rent a bike, keep in mind that the basic city bikes usually only have one gear and can cost as little as $4 per day. However, for the mountain bikes they cost us $6 per day and definitely worth it.

By Scooter

Good news for travelers who prefer scooters! Tourists can now rent scooters officially in Siem Reap, which wasn't possible for years. With a scooter, you can explore the entire temple area independently.

  • Prices vary depending on your negotiating skills and rental period, but expect to pay around $8 to $12 per day.

  • You'll need to leave your passport or ID card as a deposit, and sometimes pay a deposit fee of $100.

  • Driving in Cambodia can be chaotic, so be careful and remember to drive on the right-hand side.

  • A 125cc scooter requires a motorcycle driver's license, but e-scooters are also available and can be recharged on the premises.

7. Book a room with a pool and possibly near Pub Street in SIEM REAP

If you want to explore the town with ease, stay around the riverfront and Old Market, or near Pub Street. These areas have plenty of accommodation options, restaurants, shopping, and tuk-tuk drivers to take you to the temples.

We stayed at Rose Royal Boutique Hotel, the hotel is just a few minutes away from the bustling Pub Street, where guests can find various restaurants, bars, and shops. The hotel also provides a free tuk-tuk service to the Angkor temples, a great convenience for guests.

For backpackers, the Onederz is the ideal place to stay. They have multiple swimming pools, dorms, and private rooms, as well as a social vibe. The onsite bar and restaurant serve local and international dishes at an affordable price.

These seven tips are essential for making the most of your visit to Angkor Wat. If you have any other valuable insights or recommendations to share, please leave them in the comments below.
